This piece is finally complete. It was originally for a charity gallery show to raise money for Doctors Without Borders, to aid the people devastated by the tsunami that struck Japan, but seeing as I was invited to participate a little late in the game, on top of working around my full time job and freelance, I never completed it in time. So it's been worked on sporadically when I've found some free time for myself, allowing me to experiment a little more.

Now it's time to finish the other illustration I've been working on, shown in the teaser below. I'll be in Maui for the next two weeks, so this one is going to take a bit longer.

It's always been too long anytime I get a chance to update my blog.

I've been extremely busy this past weekend. I'm on this self promotional kick trying to rebrand myself since most of the work I've produced in the past two years has been mainly for apparel companies, not to mention my full time job, designing apparel graphics for a more conservative, yet timeless, company. While it does pay the bills, it can get pretty tedious working a full time position that doesn't cater to your innovativeness, especially in a place where your creative ingenuity is not in the company's interest. So, I designate a small fraction of time I have at night, and more so on the weekends, to exorcising my illustrative skills and making pictures to satisfy my craving.

Above, I've included some previews of a couple pieces I'm working on. On top of that I've been redesigning my website, and creating new business cards and mailers. Just a little something to tantalize those of you who are interested.

I've been staying pretty busy lately, drawing a lot more often when not at Polo. Since my apartment building is just like an art school dorm, many of us spend late nights around the kitchen table drawing, painting, and just being creative in general over some beers and good music. I'll have to post some photo's next time. I've also recently come into an amazing illustration opportunity which I'll talk about when the project moves further into development.

A little something before I leave for the holidays. This was a piece I did a little while back, it was spontaneous and fun. Just kind of doodled a thumbnail sketch on paper and then took it to finish with some reference. It's graphite, watercolor, gouache, and digital.
Now I have to get to packing. I'm leaving cold NYC for warm and sunny Miami and then back to even colder Boston to spend time with my family and brother before he leaves for the Army. Hope everyone has a great holiday! See you in 2 weeks.

Dirty girls and MTA pages

These T-shirts are some ideas I'm going to take to print. I like the graphic eye-catching quality of the brunette, I think it'll stand out better on a shirt. The "Dirty Blonde" version gets a lot of good comments so I'm going to change up the woman's pose.

I really like working on T-shirt illos. It's lots of fun just playing with compositions and how they display across the body. The stuff I've been working on for Zoo York is fun and I really wish I could show everyone, but I can't until it's on the shelves starting this spring.

The sketchbook pages are just more faces of the working class, from train rides in the NY subway. Just using some good ol' ballpoint and brush pens.

New Sketchbook

I just started a brand new sketchbook and I've been having some fun experimenting with ink and gouache. When you get a chance to break away from some freelance work it's good to let loose and try some different things. Got some more subway drawings on the way too.

Also, I'm always listening to different kinds of music, mostly hip hop of course, and as of recent these are a few of the albums I've been digging. Kid Cudi is definitely one of my favorites.

Rip Ride Rockit

Ok, so now that the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is open at Universal Studios Orlando, I can show you some of the illustrations and graphics I produced for the attraction. These pieces specifically are located on the exterior and surrounding walls of the attraction.

These illustrations began as small ink sketches and paintings then pieced together and digitally rendered in full size sections. I pretty much maxed out Photoshop, I can't even tell you how many computer crashes we experienced. The graphics alone turned out to be 4 months worth of process in total, but the end result is as crisp on the walls as you are viewing them here.

However, I was not the only person involved in this creative process. A handful of talented individuals whom also worked on the visual aesthetics of this revolutionary roller coaster are

Sketchbook dump and a T-shirt

What's up world? Recently I was on contract with Ralph Lauren's Polo Jeans Co. illustrating and designing graphics and appliques for their Fall '10 line. Now I'm back on the grind looking for new clientele all while drawing on the subway, as always.

The T-Shirt design above was for an amateur clothing label trying to get it's feet off the ground. Luckily I didn't spend a lot of time on it knowing they probably wouldn't come up with the cash to pay for it. I was right so, they didn't get the design. It was the constant grammatical errors and misspellings in their e-mails that lead me to believe I might be dealing with children. High schoolers probably. Oh well, it just goes to show you how important contracts are.

I've also had a dry spell lately with the creativity. I feel like I need direction in order to produce an intelligent illustration. I never had this problem in college, and I'm going to attribute that to being submersed in a inspirational atmosphere with all of my creative friends.
So to get my mind flowing I just bought some of Ray Bradbury's short story books. There's sure to be some inspiration out of those.

Life on the MTA

Here are some sketches from my journeys through out NYC. I've been doing a lot of sketches on the subway, almost every time I travel. The great part is you're bound to encounter some of the most interesting characters which always makes for amusing subject matter. It's funny, I'll try to pick someone out who isn't paying attention to the people around them (ie; reading, gaming, sleeping) and it'll go smooth, but if someone catches on they either feel invaded or flattered. Some people get up from they're seat and walk over to see what you're producing, and most of the time they're amused.

Just thought I'd post some things I've worked on through the past several months. The Ecko stuff was for fun and to get input from the senior art director of Ecko Unltd. It isn't going to appear on any clothing which is why I am able to share it. The top piece was more of an experiment with ink and watercolor and how it could be applied to a piece of clothing. In the second oone we had decided the figure in the grafitti was a little childish over all and he thought it would be cool to draw the rhino in the form of a loose tag with Krink drips. After that I decided it didn't need the figure because it would only compete with the rhino. We both liked the result a lot more. The Cool Kids piece was for the Karmaloop competition that I was late for due to some extensive hours at Universal Creative and my trip to NY for James Jean's Kindling show, which was nuts by the way! This stuff is less about composition and serves more like assets for apparel. I am working on some new illustrations I'll share soon.

Orlando to Brooklyn

A lot has been going on lately. I have finished my time with Universal Creative developing the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit. I worked with an amazing team of artists, architects and engineers whom I've learned alot from. Online it may seem like I've been slacking with the lack of posting new work, but for the past year I've been working hard to help develop the most advanced roller coaster to date. Overall it was a great experience and I'm pretty excited to see my illustrations plastered across and animated through out the attraction when it opens this summer. As of now the work I produced is confidential, but I will post the photos when it opens.

I have also relocated to Brooklyn, NY. I'm working on some projects for other companies and I'll post those upon completion. More stuff coming soon, until then here are some illos to chew on.

Long Awaited

Well it's been a long time! I've been so incredibly busy illustrating for Universal Creative it's tough to get some personal time. I can't show and tell yet but I can tell you that my work is going to be 45 and 130ft tall and over 57 ft long and some of it is animated. Also keep an eye out at Burger King this spring, they're just one of the many companies promoting the new coaster, so you can catch a sneak peek at some of the illos I've produced.

Anyway, here are some sketches I did on some spare time. The burrito piece was done on a paper bag from Chipotle, sketchbook pages contain pencil and gouache, and the floting heads were done in ink and digital. I'll try to update more... like I haven't said that before. Time to give the whole thing an overall face lift. I'm also working on a legit website so I'll let you know of that when it is done.

What's good everyone. My apologies for the lack of consistent posting. I've been really busy with work at Universal Creative. I've created 5 characters in the form of a music video film crew for the new coaster, not to mention I've also been storyboarding for the animation of these characters as well as designing graphics for the attraction's queue. Anayway, enough rambling, this is the cover i created for the sixth issue of MOLOKO+ Magazine. I must apologize to some of my friends for one of the images selected in this issuse. I gave Moloko+ specific images to use for the short bio on myself but they decided to take several images from my blog without my consent one of which is the Megacon poster Dustin D'Arnault and I designed with the artwork of many friends from Ringling College of Art and Design. Hey everyone, sorry for the amount of time in between posts. Life's been crazy since graduation. I'm moving to Orlando on Friday and beginning my employment with Universal Creative. I'll be working on the design and style of the new roller coaster opening in March '09. It's really cool, there is a lot of illustration (graphic/ sketchbook style)that is going to be the atmosphere of this new ride. I don't think I'm allowed to talk about it too much yet. All I can tell you is that it is the most revolutionary coaster to date.

I've been doing some work here and there and as soon as I have everything unpacked and set up I'll post some work ASAP. Once again, sorry for the delay.

My illo for Street Fighter:20 years of the World Warriors
Coming this August.

This piece was lots of fun to do, especially since Udon Comics gave free creative control over it. I made use of Dhalsim's abilities to tie in a good composition. I kept the original pencil drawing instead of using an inked line because it gave more life and energy to the piece. I chose Dhalsim's blue "costume" for nostalgic reasons. It was the color I always unintentionally picked as a kid when I played SF 1 and 2 back in the day.

My piece was selected for the Street Fighter: 20 Years of the World Warriors. An artist tribute book to the worlds most legendary fighting game. Udon Comics has asked all winners to try and refrain from showing their work before the book's scheduled release date in August (July for those attending San Diego Comic Con!). The book will feature 163 juried submissions. Like I said in my last post, I'll try to hold off but... August is so far away.
In other news my City Transit illustration was selected for the Best of Ringling gallery show on April 18th! Congrats to all those who were selected!

Well, back to work on my senior thesis.

And yet another Advanced Media assignment. This is the first sculpture assignment Don Brandes has ever given, and my first sculpture ever created. It was actually a lot of fun, despite the fact I resented doing it at first, only because of my senior thesis workload. It was interesting how useful the turn around sketch became when translating 2D to 3D. I had always seen it done for character models in animation but never realized how much info you need to rely on until I attempted the sculpting.
It began with an armature wire sculpture as a basic shape, in this case a sphere. Then tinfoil was added to create the shape of the head (as seen in the sketch) to create a surface for the Sculpy to bond to. Then I created each feature out of Sculpy individually. In the end I got rid of the military cap because it covered his face. I think the fez is was cooler anyway. I really wish that I had taken pictures of the entire process though.

I also just finished a piece for the Street Fighter Illustration Tribute Book coming out in July published by Udon Comics. I don't know if I was selected or not just yet but I've got my fingers crossed. Udon Comics has asked that those who have submitted do NOT show the work until the book is published... we'll see how long I can hold out.

Sci-fi

Another Advanced Media project assigned by Don Brandes. The objective was to create a sci-fi or fantasy piece using acrylic paint. I decided to go the 50's sci-fi route in the form of a comic book cover/movie poster. I haven't shown any process before so I guess now is as good a time as any. I began with the sketches above. Not liking the first composition I reworked it and took new reference photos. In the color roughs stage I kind of already knew what I wanted in my head so I went with the first one. I decided against the bathing suit style of the space uniform adding sleeves and legs. I have had mixed reviews on the font and it's something I'm willing to reconsider. In the end I had a lot of fun doing this piece!

Megacon 2008

The Official Ringling College of Art + Design Megacon 2008 banner! I was asked by the Illustration department to create a 9ft x 3ft banner that suspends behind our booth at Megacon. I wanted to include the work of everyone that was attending so, Dustin D'Arnault and I collaborated. We gathered many sketchbooks and spent hours on end searching and scanning. At first it felt extremely "cut & paste" because there was no flow. We tried different ideas changing the composition so many times. Finally, Dustin and I sat down one night and created a "flowy" frame to support everyones sketches as well as a path for the eye to travel. The banner includes works by Eric Bonhomme, Sarha Caterisano, Luis Espinosa, Erin Mcguire, Andrew Olson, Francis Vallejo, and Adam Volker.

This is a series of watercolors I did for my dad about a week ago. He was constantly asking me for artwork that he could hang in the house, he didn't care what it was he just wanted something I created. I don't think the subject matter I produce (robots, monkeys, skeletons,gangster rappers,etc.) fit on his walls. So, I catered to his taste and did some mixed drinks I know he likes. I rarely illustrate with watercolors, it's not because I don't like them, I just never use the medium. Anyway, I received a phone call today and my dad was pleased. Now I can finally post them.

This was a pen and ink assignment for my Advanced Media class instructed by Don Brandes. It's exactly what the title says. I had to make an image with a human, an animal, and a machine. As a thumbnail sketch this ended up being the most interesting me because of the angles and perspective, not to mention the characters themselves.

Long time no post. Ok, so this is a skateboard I did as a charity. The board was given to me broken so I made use of it in my illustration. I had a lot of fun with the composition. It's also finally motivated me to do an illustration on the blank deck that's been sitting in my closet for the past year.

The Tata Gala was loads of fun with a huge turn out of over 300 people and approximately $3,000 raised for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation! Amazing artwork, great music, open bar, and lots of socializing. Next year will be even bigger! Get ready!

Tata Gala

This piece was done for the Tata Gala, a gallery show hosted by my good friend Erik Jones. The event is also a fund raiser for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. I did it last minute, like most of my friends in the show, because Erik just had to schedule it during crunch time at the end of the semester. Other artists featured in the show are Nathan Fox and Phil Noto. It's going to be excellent!

Master Copy

This is a master copy of a painting by George Bellows. Bellows is known for his illustrated boxing matches featuring pale skinned fighters in a crowded ring. This was a lot of fun to do. The cool thing about doing a master copy is seeing the feeling the strokes and seeing the paint through the eyes of the original artist. Oil on canvas.

This purpose of this assignment was to produce images quickly in as many techniques and media as possible. I had a lot of fun with this one. Most of the heads come from old photography books by August Sanders and Sabastio Salgado and a couple celebrity's for fun. By the end of these portraits I was drawing heads much quicker than I had before. I was surprised by how fast and correctly I was producing them. They aren't in any specific order.

It's been 5 months since me last update. Shame on me. After much hounding from my friends I present some of the work I've done over the past several months.

The DJ piece was the first assignment of the semester. Acrylic on board.
The hand is actually from last semester's figure class. Instead of painting the whole figure like I normally did I decided on this day I would just focus on one area. The day before I had just received Shawn Barber's Tattooed Portraits in the mail. Having looked through it I was really inspired by the color pallet he uses. Oil on canvas.
This was an overnight assignment. The goal was to make it feel like it was night, so I got a little creative and painted a skull character in fear of some unknown light source and the top of his head busting open.
This assignment was for an editorial piece. I rushed this one. It was due a couple days after it was assigned and it could still use a lot of work. The article was about patients on life support who's brains weren't functioning correctly but their hearts were in perfect condition. Doctors lied to families telling them that they're loved ones were "dead" and pulled the plug without informing the families that the patients were technically still alive. Something like that. That's what I get for not posting on time.
This piece is also not finished. Titled "Hip Hop Head" Its basically a tribute to some of the hip hop artists that inspire me. I got a lot of positive feedback about this piece. Almost everyone said they liked that the heads were mostly iconic and sketchy, and some people said it felt to disconnected from the rest of the piece. I've got a pretty good idea of what I need to do in order to make it feel more united.

These are editorial illustrations I did for the July/August 2007 issue of InsideOut Magazine. The opportunity was presented to me by my girlfriend Laura whom informed the Art Director that her boyfriend is an illustrator. Originally the editor presented a really cliche idea, I thought, in which a hand holding a bag of money crossed another hand holding a tree. I did the illustration they requested and apon saving it Photoshop decided to unexpectedly quit, so all the information was lost. I scanned and e-mailed some thumbnails to Laura to give to the Art Director, ones that I thought were more creative conceptually. Upon receiving the sketches they requested 2 of the 3 for the article. They wanted to keep the illustrations simple which I thought was even nicer considering I was also doing the assignment below for Gary Kelley. I'd like to also give special thanks to Sterling Hundley for sharing his knowledge on idea generation.

I chose a band I don't really listen to other than what they play on the radio because I wanted to challenge myself. It has made me curious to hear the rest of their album so I'll probably pick it up after I finish the assignment. I've had a lot of fun with this so far, but I'll just have to see what Thiel thinks tomorrow.

This is a poster for the "Illest of Ill" show on the 29th. I did the drawing and Willie Diaz pimped it up with some graphic art. For some reason the thermometer in his mouth (hence the title) isn't red, That would be Senor Diaz's wrong doing. Either way, I think it is a good piece. It goes to show you what is born when great minds work alike.

I wet the bed

Another 2nd semester Sophmore illustration, in which individuals wrote down secrets on scrap paper, mixed them up in a hat, and then drew out one out at random. As you can see mine was about wetting the bed. My goal was to make the bed look higher then the viewer so you feel like a child, and exagerate the urine to make the bed look drenched.

This is a digital illustration I did 2nd semester sophmore year. It's a short story about a creepy little girl that haunts a humble old woman, they happen to have the same name, so the kid keeps on inviting herself into the old lady's appartment, and at the end decides to move in, so the old woman goes mad.
